MS Title:
Design of Complex Systems and Structures under Uncertainty

Description:
System and structural design requires crucial engineering decisions under considerable uncertainty. In fact, methods for uncertainty quantification are required in order to characterize the system’s performance adequately. Moreover, for designing a system or structure, it is necessary to explore alternative design solutions. An efficient manner for exploring such solutions is applying optimization techniques. This in turn demands evaluating the system’s performance repeatedly, considering different scenarios and different design solutions, which can be very costly from the numerical viewpoint. In view of this challenge, the design of complex systems and structures under uncertain conditions has become the subject of active research. The aim of this mini-symposium is to provide a platform for addressing the latest progress on approaches for designing complex systems and structures under uncertain conditions. The scope of the mini-symposium is broad, as it covers different topics such as uncertainty quantification, aleatoric and epistemic uncertainty, efficient optimization schemes, advanced simulation techniques, sensitivity analysis, optimization of vibration mitigation devices, surrogate models, robust design, reliability-based design, multi-objective optimization, topology optimization involving uncertainty, life-cycle optimal design, optimal inspection and maintenance scheduling, supercomputing and artificial intelligence (AI) aided design for optimization of systems and structures with uncertainty, etc. Both theoretical developments and applications involving systems of engineering interest are particularly welcomed in this session.
